Motor Vehicle Registration

The office of the Tax Assessor Collector handles motor vehicle transactions on a daily basis. We process vehicle registrations renewals, transfers of title, handicap permits and plates, temporary permits, and much more.

It is important to keep in mind that you when attempting to renew you vehicle registration over the counter, you will need to present the following:

* Vehicle Information (VIN or and plate number)
* Current proof of Insurance on vehicle being registered.
* A copy of Vehicle Inspection History (VIR).
* Registered Owner's valid U.S. Government issued I.D card. (i.e. TX Driver's License, TX I.D., U.S. Passport card, etc.)

You may also renew your registration by mail. Send your renewal form, a photo copy of the vehicle’s current insurance, along with a photocopy of the registered owner’s driver’s license or I.D card, and your check for the registration amount PLUS $1.00 for mail-in processing fee to: Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector, P.O. Box 952, Brownsville, Texas 78523. Please make sure that the check or money order contains the registered owner’s Driver’s License Number. We will send you’re your new registration sticker (or new plates) within 6 business days. In addition, for any questions concerning internet renewals, NSF (non-Sufficient Funds) Checks, and automobile refunds please contact the automobile bookkeeping department at: 956-544-0800 ext. 289 and 290.

Also, for title transfers, Tax Code Section 152.0412 requires that SPV (standard presumptive value) be used to determine the tax base for calculating sale tax due (click here to obtain SPV). To avoid sales tax and transfer penalties under the transportation code, section 501.146 on all title transfer must be done within 30 calendar days of the purchase date. If the vehicle is from out of state a Texas State inspection is required. To process a title transfer with an affidavit of Motor Vehicle Gift Transfer (click here to obtain the form which must be notarized) from an eligible party this affidavit must be filed in person by either the recipient of the gift or the person from whom the gift is received.

Further Convenience options:

To increase public convenience, our office has teamed up with the private sector to offer vehicle registration transactions during extended hours of operations and locations more convenient to you. For a convenience fee, you may obtain vehicle registration renewal at any of the H-E-B locations county wide. * Note, you will need to present your registration renewal notice and your vehicle registration must not be expired in order to renew at any H-E-B subcontractor location.
