The historic 1912 Cameron County Courthouse, known as the Dancy Building is named after Oscar C. Dancy who served as Cameron County Judge for a record breaking fifty years. Throughout his time in office, Judge Dancy was known for developing the County road system and his support of low local taxes. He was also successful for acquiring grants from the State and federal governments to pay for programs such as, family farm, flood control and roads. Ironically, all of the efforts that Judge Dancy put into building roads in the County, he never drove or owned a car.

The Dancy Building ranks among the most beautifully and architecturally significant County courthouses in Texas. Constructed in the early Twentieth Century Classical Revival style, the building features a unique exterior use of Terra Cotta trim. Inside, the design reflects the contemporary Sullivanesque style, as seen in the extensive decorative moldings, the ornate iron railings and in other attractive fixtures. Also noteworthy is the building's central rotunda, with its stunning, stained glass skylight.

The Dancy Building is also significant in that it is one of the most notable achievements of famed Texas architect Atlee B. Ayres. One of the most prominent architects of the early Twentieth Century, Ayers, a product of the Columbia University School of Architecture, served as Texas State Architect, designing numerous important public structures throughout the State, including the Texas State Office Building in Austin.

The Dancy Building was rededicated on October 17, 2006 and it houses the County Judge, two County Commissioners, County Administrator, County Auditor, County Treasurer, Budget Officer, Civil Legal Division, Human Resources Department, Program Development & Management Department and the Emergency Management Department .
